FDA clears Paradromics to begin a clinical study of its brain-computer interface for speech restoration

On November 20, 2025, Paradromics announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a clinical study of its brain-computer interface for speech restoration. The Austin-based company said the study will evaluate whether its implanted device is safe and can give a person with paralysis the ability to communicate through text or synthesized speech.

Paradromics’ system records neural activity through an array of fine microelectrodes placed in the cortex and aims to translate the intended speech of people who have lost the ability to talk. The company joins a small field of implanted brain-computer interface developers, including Neuralink, Synchron, and Precision Neuroscience, that have moved into human studies. Several competitors already had regulatory clearance for their own trials.

The approval marks Paradromics’ entry into human testing, a threshold that separates laboratory demonstrations from studies in patients. Restoring communication to people who cannot speak, whether from spinal cord injury, stroke, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, has become one of the most closely watched goals of the brain-computer interface field.
