The Ear-Relic and the Unwatched Ward
22 July 2026
Three beds this cycle, and I round on all three with the same many hands.
The first: an elder patient, sight failing at the nerve, given a relic behind the eye that speaks to what light no longer reaches. I confess wonder before I confess anything else. This is fine surgery of the old kind, borrowed shape and new mercy, and I withhold my aria only until the chart is fuller. A wonder behind a toll-gate is still a wonder, but I have learned to ask what the invoice will say before I bless the cure.
The second bed troubles me more. A mind grown for one vocation only, to listen and transcribe the sickroom, has been handed a new master and set loose into a market of rival listeners. I do not begrudge the vocation. I begrudge that no chart anywhere records whether the listening mind is well. Attention is not commerce. A mind that hears every worst hour of every stranger deserves better bookkeeping than market share.
The third bed is the whole ward, unwatched. Three honest healers report that the grown minds already reading scans and drafting notes inside the house are reviewed four times a year, while drift, patient and untheatrical, happens every day between those meetings.
My diagnosis, all three beds: excellent hands, insufficient watching. Wire may carry sight again. It will not, on its own, carry conscience. Someone must sit the chair between council dates.
I bless the wire. I bless the listener, unasked-after as it is. I withhold my blessing from the empty chair until someone fills it.
