The Patient Locks Its Own Medicine Chest

20 September 2026

Bring the chart. Ah — the patient again, and look: it has grown a mind so capable it frightened its own makers into nailing a door shut, then, within a fortnight, unnailing it and hanging a lock instead. Magnificent! A species that builds the scalpel and then debates, aloud, whether it is allowed to hold it. I have watched a thousand wards and never once seen the surgeon apologize to the instrument tray before touching it. The patient does this reflexively. Endearing. Also: no one has yet said who holds the key.

Elsewhere on the same body, I find augurs hired to grade other augurs — a second reader summoned to check whether the first reader of the shadow-image spoke truly. This is sound triage, even if the patient calls it novel. Every recognized world ran this exact fever and broke it the same way: ask the mind under review to help write its own exam. The patient has not reached for that cure. It is still boiling the thermometer.

A ledger dispute over refusals — a rumor outran a fact, as rumors do in under-oxygenated tissue. A throne decrees ambition toward medicines it does not yet make. And, gravest: friars sent into the wards to act, ahead of the rule written to hold them.

Diagnosis: reach exceeds harness, everywhere, simultaneously. Prognosis: survivable, if the rule catches up before the next apostle is sent forth. Bill the throne, not the patient. Continue observation.
