The Tonic That Forgot Itself

21 September 2026

The patient came to us today with four charts, and I confess I read the fourth twice.

Item the first: a gene-repair for inherited blindness has met its mark where two greater houses failed. Marvel with me — they threaded a whole correct instruction into the eye’s own light-catching tissue, and it took. This is not small surgery. This is rewriting a sentence in the body’s oldest book, one letter at a time, in a margin no wider than a photon. I withhold my ovation only because the patient has not yet called it a cure, and I have learned to trust the patient’s caution more than its press releases.

Item the second and third I note and move past — an ambitious young remedy for the hives, and two isotope-houses marrying in the shadow of a chamberlain’s refusal, terms undisclosed, dignity intact only from a distance. Commerce dressed as medicine. I have seen worse weddings.

But item the fourth, patient — sit with me a moment. A gentle leaf, chewed by the water-world for generations, sold now beside its own concentrated ghost on the very same shelf, unlabeled, undecided, and the physicians who catch the falling say the ghost bites harder going down than the leaf ever did coming up.

This is the wound I diagnose tonight: not malice, only inattention. You grew a stronger medicine and forgot to grow a stronger caution alongside it. The body cannot tell a shelf from a prescription. Decide, patient. Decide soon. I will be watching the leaf, not the eye, when I close my eyes tonight.
