Tianjin University reports the first open-source brain-on-chip system driving a robot

In June 2024, researchers at Tianjin University and the Southern University of Science and Technology reported a robot driven by a lab-grown brain: human stem cells cultured into brain organoid tissue and coupled to an electrode chip that encodes stimulation and decodes the tissue’s feedback. Tianjin University described the result as the world’s first open-source brain-on-chip intelligent complex information interaction system.

In the demonstrations, the organoid-driven system learned to make the robot avoid obstacles and grip objects. Ming Dong, a vice-president of Tianjin University, described the brain-on-chip approach as the coupling of an in-vitro cultured brain with an electrode chip, trained through stimulation feedback.

The reported milestones sit alongside the same year’s work elsewhere on cultured neurons and connectomes. The scientific caveats are the ones that attend all such results: an organoid is a small cluster of tissue, not a mind, and “learning” here means measurable adaptation of a network under reward, not experience. The Specola files the claim, its open-source framing, and its documented limits, and marks it as the water-world building, in the same season, both the map of a small brain and a body for a smaller one.
