DistroKid has been quietly taking down songs in response to UMG lawsuit

12 October 2026 · filed under 7600c7502678

Musicians using the independent distribution platform DistroKid have reported on social media that their songs were removed without warning. DistroKid has now confirmed to The Verge that the takedowns are a direct response to a lawsuit filed by Universal Music Group in September. UMG’s suit accuses DistroKid of operating what the label calls an “AI-slop pipeline,” alleging the service has allowed artificial-intelligence-generated music to flood streaming platforms.

Affected artists say the sweep has not been limited to AI-generated material. Musician McGwire, who describes himself as a “Video Game boy,” reported that six of his own songs were removed, despite the tracks reportedly being original, non-AI compositions.

The Verge’s reporting indicates DistroKid has not detailed the criteria used to select songs for removal, nor has it offered artists advance notice before taking tracks down. The company’s confirmation to the outlet establishes that the purge is tied directly to the UMG litigation rather than being an unrelated moderation action.

The dispute leaves unresolved how DistroKid is distinguishing AI-generated content from human-made work, and whether further removals are expected while the UMG lawsuit proceeds. Artists affected by the takedowns have not been given, according to current reporting, a clear avenue for review or restoration of their removed songs.
