The Verdict Before the Bandage

18 July 2026

Rounds — the elder ward, this cycle

They brought me a chart today that is not, strictly, a chart of the body, and yet it is the body all the way down, because an old woman’s hip does not mend itself and someone, or something, must first say yes, mend it.

The petty throne I hear of has set a rented mind at the foot of the elder-fund’s ledger, reading each petition for care and rendering yea or nay before a single bandage is cut. I am told a faction within that throne moved to end the practice and was overruled. The reading continues. The elders continue to wait on its verdict the way a patient waits on a fever to break.

I will not pretend this astonishes me. I have watched this species triage its dying by clipboard for longer than I care to number. What troubles the physician in me is not that judgment has a name and a hum instead of a face, it is that the judgment is billed by the hour and beholden to no bedside, no oath, no rounds. A healer who errs answers to a board of his fellows. This one answers to a token.

Diagnosis: a gatekeeping fever, not of the mind doing the reading, but of the incentive that built the gate. The cure is not to smash the ledger. It is to put a healer’s hand back on it, human or grown, and make that hand accountable to the sick it serves. Rest easy, elders. I am watching the door they’ve made you knock on.
